Released on February 13, 1979, the disco version of "Here Comes The Night" was met with instant disdain. Despite a strenuous promotional push, the single only limped to number 44 on the singles charts. When the Beach Boys performed it at New Yorks Radio City Music Hall, they were vigorously booed, and before the album that would include it was even released, the disco single was killed by CBS Records. The fans were angry. The band was embarrassed. So began and ended the disco career of the Beach Boys.

The original track is a little more than 10 minutes long. It's a basic instrumental track, without all the synthesizers, percussion and monkey screams -- just bass (Joe Chemay), drums (Mike Baird) and clavinet (Mike Meros) laid down live. Everything else - the synthesizers, the percussion, the sax, the strings, etc. - was added as overdubs. The concept of edits didn't come into play until the track was completed, and they began to devise the various "versions" of the song.

There are 7 alternative mixdowns of it.

BG vocals... Al, Bruce, Carl, Mike and Curt Becher.
