he thought he was too advanced, and that he´d eventually have to leave
people behind. All my friends thought I was crazy to do Pet Sounds.
The parts which you can not clear hear in the chorus are: On "I Just Wasn't Made For These Days," there are two layers of Beach Boys backing vocals buried down in the mix. The final "Tape Identification Data" sheet for the multi-track shows that group vocals occupied two of the seven vocal tracks laid down for the song, the others all being Brian. For the record, here's how the tracks are logged: Track 1: Bryan - Chorus In fact, the backing vocals by the BBs includes the buried "Spanish" vocals that are so often talked about. If you listen to the bonus track at the end of the second disc of the PS SESSIONS box, you can hear that it's the group singing those vocals, not just Brian. Even if it's not clear to you from the sound, think about this -- it's definitely multiple voices and they're all on one track of the final 8-track, so there's no way it could be Brian multi-tracked! [Something else worth noting: An earlier "Tape Identification Data" sheet for the IJWMFTT eight-track has a large notation on it that says "Dennis Tune," and the information logged for the individual eight tracks shows that the two tracks of lead vocals were re-recorded at some point. Brian is noted as the vocalist on the re-records, but there isn't one listed for the original vocals. However, on the master tape, at the end of one of Brian's leads, after the tape machine is turned off for his re-record, you can actually hear Dennis sing the title line to himself! Apparently, Dennis sang the original leads on the song and Brian recorded over them, but left just a little piece of one of Dennis' vocals at the end of the tape.] But besides that, Mike is very obvious in the finished version of IWFTT. He's doing the bass vocal part, which is quite obvious in Linett's stereo mix. Also, it's him doing the "Baby Don't You Know" part (it was a punch-in on one of Brian's lead vocal tracks), and it's him doing the "No" and "Unh-unh" ad-libs during the closing vamp (it's very obvious on the SOT sets).
